The OBBBA just introduced temporary federal deductions that sound generous on the surface:
• Up to $25,000 in cash tips
• Up to $12,500 in overtime pay ($25,000 for joint filers)
That’s real money.
But before anyone celebrates, let’s talk about what actually matters.
Because this isn’t automatic relief.
It’s conditional.
And it’s temporary.
To qualify, workers must:
• Have a valid Social Security number
• Earn under $150,000 in MAGI ($300,000 for joint filers)
• Work in roles where tipping was customary before December 31, 2024
• Stay below the phaseout thresholds
And if your income exceeds the limit?
The deduction phases out quickly by $100 for every $1,000 over the threshold.
This isn’t universal relief.
It’s targeted relief.
The deduction only applies to the portion of overtime pay that exceeds your regular rate not the entire paycheck.
Payroll taxes still apply.
W-2 reporting still applies.
Withholding still applies.
This is a federal income tax deduction not a payroll tax break.
And it expires after 2028.
The real question is:
How do I position my income while this window is open?
Temporary deductions create planning opportunities especially for:
• Workers near the income threshold
• Dual-income households
• Employers managing payroll strategy
• Business owners with tipped staff
Waiting until filing season is too late.
These decisions affect estimated payments, withholding, and cash flow strategy now.
Yes, the government boosted tip and overtime deductions.
But the benefit is:
• Income-sensitive
• Compliance-heavy
• Time-limited
Temporary relief without planning is just noise.
Strategic positioning is what turns policy into advantage.
If you earn tip income, overtime, or operate a business employing those who do, this is not something to skim past.
Tax laws shift.
Smart positioning protects outcomes.
